Sierra 2 Center for the Arts and Community 2791 24th Street Sacramento, Ca 95818 Dr. Bob Mcarty and Josh Packard from St. Mary’s Press will lead a pre-conference symposium on the “Disaffiliation of Young Catholics” on Thursday, September 26th from 10am – 3pm. They will share the findings of a two-year national study on why
young people are leaving the Catholic Church. The discussion will include stories from young people and the myriad of reasons they are choosing to leave the faith and where they are going. Cost is $55 and lunch is included. |
Bob McCarty has been in professional ministry since 1973, serving in parish, school, diocesan, and national settings. He offers consultations, retreats, workshops and training programs in ministry skills and issues internationally. Bob serves as the project coordinator for the Saint Mary’s Press research project, Going, Going, Gone: The Dynamics of Disaffiliation in Young Catholics. Bob has a BS in Sociology/Theology from St. Joseph’s University, an MA in Religious Education from LaSalle University and a D.Min. from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana. Bob is adjunct faculty at The Catholic University of America and The University of Dallas.

Josh is a sociologist, professor and researcher at the University of Northern Colorado, where he is also the Executive Director of the Social Research Lab. He has written numerous academic articles and given dozens of presentations in the field of sociology of religion. He regularly teaches courses in research methods, sociology of religion and sociology of community. His course materials have been included in the Association of Religion Data Archives, and his research has been profiled in Leadership Journal, The Huffington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, Patheos and numerous other outlets.
He is the award-winning author of the ground-breaking book Church Refugees, which examines the phenomenon of the Dones, those people who have fled the church but not their faith.
